The Design of Animal Communication by Marc D. Hauser,

The Design of Animal Communication by Marc D. Hauser,
When animals, including humans, communicate, they convey information communication perception and express their perceptions of the world. Because different organisms are able to produce communication perception and perceive different signals, the animal world contains a diversity of communication systems. Based on the approach laid out in the 1950s by Nobel laureate Nikolaas Tinbergen, this book looks at animal communication from the four perspectives of mechanisms, ontogeny, function, communication perception and phylogeny. The book's great strength is its broad comparative perspective, which enables the reader to appreciate the diversity of solutions to particular problems of signal design communication perception and perception. For example, although the neural circuitry underlying the production of acoustic signals is different in frogs, songbirds, bats, communication perception and humans, each involves a set of dedicated pathways designed to solve particular problems of communicative efficiency. Such comparative findings form the basis of a conceptual framework for understanding the mechanisms underlying communication systems communication perception and their evolution.

The Acoustics of Speech Communication: Fundamentals, Speech Perception Theory, and Technology by J. M. Pickett,

The Acoustics of Speech Communication: Fundamentals, Speech Perception Theory, and Technology by J. M. Pickett,
"This is the only book to relate all three of the currently interactive areas of speech science-acoustic phonetics, speech perception, communication perception and speech technology. The book presents a gradual course, starting with a clear tutorial approach to basic speech then leading to speech perception research, the various theories of speech perception, communication perception and the modern speech technologies of computer synthesis communication perception and recognition of speech messages. The aim is to bring the reader through basic acoustics, spectrum analysis, vowel communication perception and consonant acoustics, communication perception and into the research literature of speech perception technology. "The basic acoustic theory of speech production, the Source-Filter Theory, is clarified via text communication perception and diagrams. This knowledge is then applied to interpreting spectrograms of speech examples that sample all the phonetic distinctions among vowels communication perception and consonants. Distinctive acoustical patterns for vowel communication perception and consonant perception by listeners are summarized in detail based on the research literature. Critical discussions provide theories of motor, auditory, communication perception and computer recognition of speech. Consonant communication perception and vowel recognition by the hearing-impaired is described in relation to acoustic phonetic distinctions. Techniques of speech synthesis, recognition analysis by machines, communication perception and speech technologies are thoroughly explained. "Anyone interested in speech acoustics, acoustic phonetics, speech communication perception and hearing science, psychoacoustics, communication perception and speech perception at any level.
